As one of the most common types of procedures, the root canal is well known to patients. However, they may not know about the different reasons that dentists need to perform root canals or why root canals are still so widely used. It seems that dentistry has advanced so much, but yet root canals are still done. That’s because root canals are effective. At Dental Arts Clearwater, we know that root canals may not be a patient favorite, but afterward, they appreciate the result which has their tooth feeling as good as new.

Why Do Patients Need Root Canals?

There are many reasons that patients need root canals, and all of those reasons go to that the pulp – the mass of blood vessels and the nerve tissue inside the tooth – is infected. Removing that infected pulp is a big priority because if you don’t remove it, that infection can spread, causing an abscess and resulting in the loss of a tooth. Root canals ensure that you don’t have to worry about losing the tooth. The pulp is extracted, and your tooth is once again healthy and able to work with the other teeth in your mouth.

How are Root Canals Performed?

A root canal is performed when the dentist removes part of the top of the tooth to get at the nerve pulp. Once inside, the dentist will remove the infected pulp and make sure that the structure of the tooth is sound. Removing the infected pulp is the part that people hate, but it doesn’t take too long. After that, the dentist fits you with a temporary crown. The permanent crown takes a couple of weeks to fabricate, and once the permanent crown is installed, the tooth is good as new.

A patient never wants to hear they need a root canal, but the procedure works very effectively. At Dental Arts Clearwater in Clearwater, we take pride in making sure our patients are comfortable throughout the process and that the root canal is as much easier on the patient than they expect.
